Only In New York
Season 1: The Tigerman of Harlem

Crazy sh*t happens in New York all the time.  New Yorkers are used to it.  Business as usual.  But on Saturday, October 4th, 2003, a crowd in the heart of Harlem were gathered around a project building, looking into the sky, jaws dropped as a police officer rappelled down the side of the building with a tranquilizer gun. This wasn’t business as usual.  He stopped at a window to peak in when, all of a sudden, a roar shook the block. New Yorkers hear a lot of things, but the roar of a 500 pound Bengal tiger is not one of them.

Police successfully tranquilized and extracted the tiger named Ming, along with a 5-foot alligator named Al, from the Harlem apartment, and eventually tracked down and arrested the owner, Antoine Yates.  Police Commissioner Ray Kelly called it an “‘only in New York’ story.”  Antoine was ridiculed in the press, the butt of jokes on late night comedy shows, and made an example of by the NYPD and justice department.  But underneath the surface is the incredible, untold tale of The Tigerman of Harlem.

Each season, Only In New York explores amazing true stories out of The Big Apple.
