Brooklyn is diverse. People from everywhere raise families there, creating a dynamism unseen almost anywhere else. Brooklyn native Chef Ayesha Nurdjaja is a testament to the borough’s diversity. Chef and proprietor of New York restaurants Shuka and Shukette, Nurdjaja grew up in Gravesend, with an Indonesian dad and an Italian mom. Her father was a chef, but Nurdjaja says her mother was the family’s best cook. Early exposure to exquisite food at home drove her professional passion, pushing Chef Nurdjaja to explore Middle Eastern cuisine at her own restaurants.
